My Heart Beats for you
By Yusuf Abdulwasii
I woke to the sound of my mobile alarm, blaring through the room. Groaning, I pulled the duvets aside and walked towards the washroom.
While brushing my teeth, I had a recall of last night’s events. Tears brimmed my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.
Pinching my nose, I walked out and sat down on the bed. My phone was on the table. I picked it up and called Julie.
“Assalmu Alaikum Julie. How are you doing?” I asked.
“All fine sweetheart. You tell me how did your wedding go? Did you guys kiss? OMG! Did you guys ‘do it’?”
“Ughh….No. That’s way to early. Anyways I called to let you know that I’ll be starting work from tomorrow.”
“Okay…wait,WHAT? But you just got married and what about your honeymoon?”
“Forget all that, just keep as many appointments as you can. I want to work all day tomorrow. Okay?”
“Uh-okay.” With that I ended the call and went to have a shower. I came out with a towel wrapped around my head. I dried my hair and then looked at my phone. Should I call my mom?
Nope. Not a chance, she would bombard me with questions.
I decided to take a tour around the house. But firstly I covered my hair. I walked out of my room and started debating whether I should go left or right. I decided to take right, and walked down the hall. There were 4 rooms on the first floor. The first three were for maids and other staff.
The last one was a store room. I then explored my floor, which included my room. I opened the door of the second room but no luck. Moving on to the next door, I stepped inside as I opened it. I was shocked.
“Am so sorry. I didn’t know you were here mom.”
There on the bed was mom, she lying against the headboard of the bed. She looked pale. I walked towards her, as she motioned towards her desk. There was jug of water over there. I quickly understood what she was trying to say, and poured a glass of water for her.
I helped her sit up and made her drink the water. She gulped it down quickly letting water fall on her dress. I slowed her down by pulling the glass a bit away from her.
“Are you okay? What happened?”
“Everything is fine, beta.” She said curtly avoiding to make eye contact. I flinched at her harsh tone but nevertheless checked her forehead. I gasped, she was burning up.
“Omg! You have a high fever. I’ll be back.” I said quickly rushing out of the room. I ran towards my room and got some tablets and a syrup. I again ran towards mom’s room, nearly tripping on the way.
As soon as she saw my hands filled with meds, she started protesting. But I ignored her protests and made her take the meds. I also gave her a sleeping pill so that she could sleep peacefully. Kissing her forehead, I left the room quietly.
Mom’s sick and nobody is beside her. Does dad know about this? What about Shahveer’s brother’ wife Akira?
She should be taking care of her mother-in-law. I sighed, I will take care of her frim now onwards.
I decided that tonight I would make the dinner. I then started my journey to the mysterious kitchen. Naw, just kidding. After roaming around for thirty minutes, I finally found the kitchen. I saw a silhouette, and immediately walked inside.
I saw a woman, stirring the pan and humming a soft melody. She had a beautiful voice. I took slow steps towards her. I placed my hand on her shoulder. A loud squeal escaped her mouth. She was startled, I started to laugh at her expression.
She was red by now, “Uhmm…sorry miss.” She had a turkish accent. I squealed in delight. I always wanted a turkish friend. She was beautiful, with fair complexion and green eyes she could easily pass for an American.
“Salam. I’m Shanzay, the new bride.” I said, smiling at her.
“Hello ma’am. How may I help you?”
“Oh you don’t need to call me ma’am. Just Shanzay is fine.”
“But ma’am Akira wants me to call her ma’am.”
I frowned at her statement, “Oh no, just Shanzay for me okay?” I said while playfully glaring at her. Then smiled, as she nodded. I then asked her about her name and what she was doing here.
She told me her name was Armanoush and she was the maid.
She was only twenty-five and was working to help her family. I told her that from now on I would make all the meals in the house and I will wash all the clothes.
She protested, telling me that it was her work and she would not get paid. I didn’t listen and just reassured her that she would get paid. She still argued, so I said that I would wash Mentally, deciding that I would increase her pay.
After shooing Noush away, I made biryani for everyone. It was now ready to be eaten. I set out the plates and waited for everyone to come down. 10 minutes passed and no one came. I then went upstairs to mom’s room, on the way I met Noush. I asked her that why isn’t anybody coming down to have dinner.
She told me that no one has dinner together. Her statement made me frown. I went upstairs and brought mom down. Meanwhile I told Noush to get Bhai Inayat and his wife Akira. They came down moments later, asking if I want something. I just smiled and shook my head. I made them sit on the table and served them.
I motioned for them to eat. They didn’t respond. But after a few minutes later, dad came and they all started eating together. The all complimented about the food with uneasy smiles on their faces. Soon dinner was finished and everyone went back to their rooms. I cleared out the table and then asked Noush that why don’t they eat together.
“They did eat together, but Akira cam along and they stopped eating together.”
My eyebrows twitched together in confusion. Noush nust have noticed and continued with a sigh.
“When Akira got married Ma (Shahveer’s mom) told her to start making dinner for the family since she was the bride. Akira refused, and this resulted in a fight between Ma and Akira. Akira is very lazy and she spends money on useless things.” This showed that Noush didn’t like Akira at all. Even though my paternal aunts are greedy and I don’t like them very much, I don’t hate Akira since she is the daughter of one of them.
“She bosses around very much and is very rude. Brother Inayat is very tensed because of her. She demands money every month for shopping.”
Woah! This is just too much. But well who am I to judge? I walked out of the kitchen, mentally making a promise that I would bring all of the family members of this household together.
Changing into my pyjamas, I pulled the duvets over me letting sleep take over.
I woke the next day at five-thirty am. After praying fajr, I quickly changed my clothes and wore a sky blue skirt with a light pink coloured scarf. My shirt was pink, with a floral print all over it. I grabbed my coat and rushed downstairs. I entered the kitchen and saw Noush cleaning the dishes.
She told me that everyone is still asleep and no one has breakfast this early. So I just grabbed an apple from the fridge and left. My car was parked behind the house. Eventually, I pulled out in front of the hospital at eight since I stopped on my way at Starbucks to get coffee. As I walked inside everyone greeted me and congratulated me. I gave them a fake smile and rushed towards my cabin.
It had been about four hours and I was exhausted after five appointments. I still had some paperwork to do and my break was due to another hour, so I decided to complete all my work. Just as I was about to start, my phone started ringing. I checked the caller ID, to see it was an unknown number. Simply ignoring it, I continued working.
My phone was constantly ringing, and it was getting annoying. I had about forty-five calls and all belonging to the unknown number. It rang again, and finally having enough I picked it up.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT? Stop calling again and again. If someone doesn’t pick your call don’t you get the idea that they don’t want to talk to you?” I growled at the caller.
“C’mon babe . Its me Shahveer. I’ve been calling you for the past hour and you haven’t answered!” He was frustrated. Well, am not interested in talking to him.
And why isn’t he callung from his original number. I sighed, I’ll figure it out later. There was knock on the door and Julie came in, “George wants to visit you.”
I smiled, “Really?I’ll be right there.” She left nodding at me. I turned my attention back to the caller.
“Sorry I’ve got work to do, so I need to leave.” I said while putting on my coat whicj which I had taken off while doing paperwork.
“Wait! First tell me who is GEORGE?is he your boyfriend? You are married, and mine. Tell me his full name I’m gonna kill HIM! THAT SON OF A-“
I cut of the phone, literally not wanting to hear him curse and also not wanting to talk to him at all. I walked out of my cabin towards the room which said ‘Visitors’. There were kids, playing around everywhere. My eyes landed on a three year old who was just watching everybody play.
He was holding a brown teddy bear in his chubby hands. His eyes widened with excitement as he watched everyone play. A cute sight might I add.
“GEORGE!” I screamed smiled at him. His eyes snapped towards mine and a cute grin made its way on his cute face. “Januuuuu!!! (Beloved).” I laughed at his attempt of saying my name, he was actually trying to say Shanuu. My nickname sounded so cute out of his mouth.
I came running towards me, opening his hands for a hug. I bent down and immediately hugged him tightly, twirling us around. He giggled, “Hey sweetheart, how are you doing?”
“Am fine janu. How about you?”
“Am fine too.” I said while kissing his cheeks. The rest of the afternoon I soent my time with the kids and George. When it was three pm I left for home. Reaching home, I immediately made my way towards mom’s room. She was looking better than yesterday. As soon as she saw me, she smiled and hugged me. I made her take the medicines.
“Thank you beta, If it weren’t for you I probably would have fallen more sick yesterday.” I kissed her cheek and told her it was no big deal. She felt asleep soon and I went towards my room. After changing out of my clothes, I decided to take a nap. But before I could do so, my phone rang. I saw it was Shahveer and then started debating whether I should pick it up or not.
I finally decided to pick it up.
“Shanzay you have no idea how much in trouble you are!” He yelled.
“Hmmm….” Was all I said. What a great reply, my brain remarked at me, you deserve a certificate. Best reply ever!
“Talk to me! Pleasee! I know you are angry but please baby you are hurting me.” He pleaded. I’m the one who is hurting you, huh? What about yourself?
“Listen Shahveer, I am not in a mood at all for this conversation, I’ll talk to you later.” With that I ended the phone call before letting him hear me weep. Tears streamed down my face. Why am I the only one getting hurt? And then people blame me that am hurting them?! Ridiculous!
I wiped my tears with the sleeves of my shirt. I fell down on the bed, letting it all out.
I have to be strong, I have to and I will be strong.
With that last thought, I fell asleep.
